Last week, CVS Health announced the official opening of its Digital Innovation Lab in Boston, a new and inventive facility that is focused on creating a digital, accessible and integrated personal experience across the pharmacy and health sectors. The Lab will serve as a hub for the rapidly growing digital team at CVS Health, which (as a whole) will remain headquartered in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

According to Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Officer for CVS Health, Brian Tilzer, “Digital technologies are ubiquitous and highly configurable”–a powerful motivator behind CVS Health’s decision to double its digital investment. CVS Health anticipates an increasing preference among customers to manage personal health via digital means and “the opening of [the] Innovation Lab is a significant step forward on this path.”

The launch of the Digital Innovation Lab marks CVS Health’s latest stride in prioritizing digital health endeavors. The new Lab is staffed with an array of team members from various backgrounds including developers, product managers, digital strategists and user-experience designers. The primary focus of the Lab will include the exploration of potential digital health breakthroughs via mobile, connected health, digital therapeutics and more. The Lab will embody CVS Health digital team’s mantra to run like a startup by rapidly testing, improving and implementing new programs with efficiency and accuracy.

New to the Accelerator Scene: Athenahealth

Calling all Beantown startup followers: the Massachusetts healthtech scene is expanding! Watertown-based Athenahealth has announced that its new accelerator for health IT startups is now open for business. The “More Disruption Please” (MDP) Accelerator went into beta in June when it began working with a single startup, Smart Scheduling, but is now inviting health IT startups to apply for participation.

Based on a mission to “drive connectivity and innovation across the continuum of care,” MDP is the third phase of a 2010 effort to connect with and promote startups that seek to address areas of concern in the health care delivery system beyond the electronic health record (EHR).  The perks of joining MDP, one might ask? Athenahealth will provide venture capital to companies through the accelerator. Aside from funding, portfolio companies get free office space at Athenahealth’s super chic Watertown headquarters and ongoing mentorship from Athenahealth experts.

Athenahealth says the accelerator will accept applicants on a rolling basis, with an anticipated residency period of roughly 8 to 12 months. More information about MDP can be found on Athenahealth’s “More Disruption Please” page.

Startup: AdhereTech
Website: www.adheretech.com
Funding: $2.35 Million as of July 9, 2014
Overview: AdhereTech created patented smart pill bottles to improve medication adherence and patient engagement. These bottles automatically measure if patients are adherent, and all data is wirelessly transmitted and analyzed in real-time. If a dose is missed, AdhereTech reminds the patient via automated phone call or text message – and on-bottle lights and chimes. Additionally, the system can solicit feedback from patients via text or phone call, determining why the dose was missed.
