“Give it up for the little guys:” Cloud-based EHRs grow popular among small practices

The results are in—according to a four-month user poll among 5,700 small and solo physician practices across the country, 83 percent of respondents said they are satisfied with their web-based EHR solutions. These practices, spanning across all medical and surgical specialties, have reversed overall small practice EHR satisfaction from barely 13 percent in 2012. Improvements in web-based EHRs across standards of implementations, updates, usability and customization are hypothesized to be driving this satisfaction increase.

Conducted by Black Book Market Research, this recently published poll also notes an increase in adoption rates of cloud-based EHRs in urban small practices—jumping from 60 percent in 2013 to 82 percent in 2015. The adoption rate in rural practices, however, remains the same at 20 percent. Of the rural solo-practice physicians surveyed, 91 percent stated a fear of Internet outages has been the number one barrier preventing them from switching over to a cloud-based solution.

Other noteworthy report findings included the following:

• 79 percent of small practices mentioned pricing as the main driving factor in purchasing a cloud-based EHR solution.
• 90 percent of solo and small practice physicians acknowledge that cloud EHR models have matured with respect to security and privacy.
• 69 percent of respondents said first-generation EHRs have not lived up to expectations. Specifically, respondents were dissatisfied with cost add-ons, affected workflows and lost time with patients.
